This should have been an easy match for the home team as they sit second in the league and their visitors Alford seconds are bottom. However,
Alford firsts are top of the league with Horncastle three points behind with two games in hand and Alford seconds seemed determined to help out their firsts by getting a draw.
As expected Horncastle completely dominated mid field possession and the defence was rarely troubled .
Gareth Ellershaw in goal did not have to make a serious save all afternoon. Alfords strength was in their defence and although the home team attack put them under constant pressure they looked secure.
Half time came with no score and Horncastle's captain Andy Mitchell read his team the riot act in the hope of being more effective in the second half.
The defence went to a back three and Chris Kime was sent forward in the hope that his experience would make a difference but the second half was much the same as the first. Horncastle had even more possession and Alford rarely got out of their own half lots of strong tackles on the top of the Dee broke up the Horncastle attacks and when they did get through the
Alford keeper made several good saves. With ten minutes left one of Alfords key defenders John Fleming pulled a muscle and had to retreat to the wing. Alford shuffled their defence and still looked secure but with five minute to go Stewart Scholey hit in long corner to James Cartwright who laid it off to Antonio Massenburgh-Monday who calmly drove the ball into the far corner of the goal giving the goalkeeper no chance.
