Match Report

Horncastle travelled down to Peteborough, missing several of their regular and fringe players and only a bare 11. After a torrential downpour the game started with the pitch still waterlogged in places. Horncastle maintained a high press for the first 10 minutes but despite their pressure were unable to finish any of their moves. The game then opened up a bit more and following a defensive error Peteborough found themselves 2 on 1 and took the lead. Horncastle restarted trying to find the same momentum they had shown in the inital 10 minutes and were soon rewarded when Rob Scott scored a screamer intercepting the ball in the opponents D and smashing it into the far top corner. Peteborough once again benefited from a defensive error as a mistimed interception saw the ball fall to an unmarked player on the back post giving them a 2-1 lead going into half time. Frustrated that they had given away both goals horncastle went into the 2nd half determined to make up for earlier mistakes. The play was much more open with both sides struggling to create open chances. Peteborough found themselves in the D and hit the ball towards the bottom corner. Quick reactions from jack ashton saw the ball stopped but the ball remained in the D leading to a 20 second scramble where jack saved the ball at least 3 further times befote it was finally cleared. After a mazy run nick bennett found himself on the edge of the D and selflessly flicked the ball to Rob Scott who deflected the ball at head height into the goal. As the match drew to a close both teams went looking for a winner. With only 2 minutes to go horncastle won a short corner. Trying a different methos nick bennet took the ball and slipped it to the back post where Jack Read deflected it in. With only a minute to remain horncastle went into a half court press and saw out the game for a fantastic, well earned victory!
