Match Report

With Julian Rinfret of team sponsors Balcan Engineering in attendance Horncastle ladies hosted Ely City ladies at home this week. Following the result from their meet earlier in the season, the home team were aware this would be one of their remaining tougher games in the new league this season.

Ely won first pushback and attacked strong from the off, with a handful attempts on goal which were denied by strong defending from Horncastle, which held off any opening score until late into the first half. Unfortunately the consistent pressure from the organised away side resulted in a 1-0 lead for Ely just before the half time whistle.

Horncastle started the second half eager to put themselves on the scoreboard, but resilient defending from Ely meant the attacking force were unable to break through. A quick counter attack from Ely caught the Horncastle defence unaware resulting in a 2v1 situation against Horncastle keeper Neame, who as a result of closing down the second player too late gave away a penalty flick. This was put confidently on the far right post taking the score to 2-0.

Ely were the more dominant side, pressing Horncastle into their defending area for the majority of the second half. A short corner awarded to the away side resulted in an excellently placed pass to a player on the post who slotted them ahead 3-0. Unfortunately, for Horncastle the immense pressure from Ely took its toll. Unable to break down the clever passing from the away side Horncastle found their deficit increase as Ely recorded goal number four. A final penalty corner minutes before the end of the game gave Ely their fifth and final goal.

The final result didn't reflect the effort put in by the home team and lessons are to be learnt from facing this assertive side.

There has been clear growth in Horncastle Ladies' play this season, following their promotion into a higher league, which is not reflected by the scoreline.  Horncastle ladies' can take pride in their current league position as they sit comfortably mid-table, which is a huge achievement coming up against several formidable opponents, such as Ely.
