Match Report

Horncastle were back on the road, this time away to Cambridge City Vets, looking to maintain their 100% record for the first half of the season.

With little time for a warm up Horncastle won the toss and opted to start with the possession. The game began uncharacteriscally slowly for Horncastle, the travelling side struggling to find any rhythm. The Vets showed their experience and sat deep frustrating Horncastle's forward line and looked to capatalise on he slow start made by Horncastle. This soon lead to a penalty corner for the home side which was duly converted with the strike squirming beneath the Horncastle goalkeeper.

The match restarted with Horncastle looking shell shocked, though this did at least galvanise them into action. The remainder of the first half was played out within the Cambridge half as Horncastle looked to level the terms. The breakthrough finally coming when a killer ball from James Cartwright found Cam Foster with space to drive into. Drawing the defence and keeper Foster hit the byline and squared the ball to Rob Scott who calmly swept home to equal the score at 1-1. Horncastle maintained the pressure on the Vets goal for the remainder of the half, unfortunately unable to convert any further opportunities.

The second half began in much the same manner, Horncastle pressing a resolute Cambridge defence who were swallowing up everything thrown at them. Whilst maintaining the bulk of possession Horncastle seemed incapable of getting the ball into the D for any clear cut chances. When the ball did reach the D Horncastle managed to win several penatly corners and twice hitting the woodword and unfortunately squandering numerous other chances. In spite of playing far from their best it was felt that if this pressure could be maintained the win would surely come.

All of a sudden the Horncastle defence found themselves under pressure when a Cambridge counter attack broke from the midfield. The defence were unfortunate to have a penalty corner awarded against them against the play. The breakthrough finally came as the Vets stepped up and again converted from a set peice, the ball was slipped left and struck goalwards with the defenders stick deflecting the already goal-bound shot high into the net.

Horncastle, finding themselves in the unusual position of being behind had no choice but to chase the game. Committing even more to attack than before in search of goals. This was not to be and Cambridge were able to exploit the exposed defence on the break to seal the match with their 3rd goal.

Horncastle will hope that this result will serve as a wake up call against any sense of complacency that has crept into their game over the past few weeks when they host Bourne Deeping 2's next Saturday.
